Consequence

Our lives, like the cities we inhabit, are shaped by an ongoing series of choices—both conscious and unconscious. Cities become a convergence of these decisions, creating paths that lead us to unexpected experiences. My concept explores this relationship through personal narratives. For instance, the red path in my map illustrates my journey since arriving in Melbourne, while grayscale lines represent the choices of others who have influenced or intersected with my own.

This exploration extends to the library, a place of discovery shaped by individual decisions. Whether seeking self-help, finding solace in romance novels, or rekindling childhood dreams through stories of astronauts, each path reflects a unique interaction with the space. My library map builds upon this, with emerging paths symbolizing the influence of strangers and brief but impactful exchanges.

In Melbourne, the city reveals its dynamic nature through its climate and activity. The same underpass serves as shelter from rain and a place of safety during storms. The grass transforms into a social hub under the sun, while benches provide rest for the homeless. These moments, influenced by weather and time, create a "visible city" composed of experiences that resonate deeply.

Reflecting on the past, Melbourne’s pre-European landscape was defined by harmony with Indigenous communities. Colonization, the gold rush, and industrialization introduced rapid urbanization, tensions, and environmental challenges, shaping the modern metropolis. This maze of time and decisions continues to evolve, and my project envisions an atmosphere that respects the past while fostering growth—an endless river of possibility.

The Process

We abstracted the iterative and non-linear nature of architectural design, where exploration across scales and techniques is central to developing a cohesive architectural proposition.

Influenced by a chessboard's grid, this form consists of 4x4m modules, aggregated into a 12x4x4 cuboid. Through subtraction, I created functional nooks and crannies across four floors, progressively transitioning from public to private spaces.

The form evolved into a circular two-story building with curved walls. To respect the existing train tracks, the second floor is partially cut. The interior adopts a maze-like arrangement of bookshelves, creating spaces for exploration. The southern façade features glass, framing uninterrupted views of the Yarra River.

The Initial Proposition

The proposition consists of four single-story curved buildings connected by paths that harmonize with the natural contours of the site. Key features include:

  • Integration with the Landscape: The design aligns with the site's unique character, sitting seamlessly under the train tracks and engaging with the Yarra River.

  • Circulation as a Metaphor: The winding paths mimic life's myriad choices, inviting personal reflection and discovery.

  • Dynamic Interaction with Context: Train tracks add vibrancy through movement and sound, enhancing the experiential quality of the site.

  • Green Spaces and Outdoor Seating: Native plantings and green zones foster quiet reflection and connection with nature.

The Proposition

The design is rooted in the fundamental relationship between people and their stories, emphasizing adaptability and connection. By blending indoor and outdoor environments with fluid forms, the library acts as a living entity, evolving with its users' needs and mirroring the dynamic nature of life itself.

The design embraces change, creating a space that evolves with its community. By minimizing fixed walls and emphasizing fluidity, the library adapts to new demands and opportunities. It becomes more than just a building—it transforms into a living, breathing entity that grows with its users.

The Exploded Isometric

This exploded isometric diagram illustrates the layered components and spatial relationships within the design. By deconstructing the project into its core elements, it highlights the integration of structure, materials, and functionality in a cohesive architectural system.

The library’s form respects and integrates with the existing site.

  • Utilization of Railway Columns: Dividing spaces and creating visual continuity.

  • Harmonized Circulation: Aligning pathways with the park’s existing thoroughfares for seamless movement.

  • Landscape and Greenery: Curved walls and natural elements create a tranquil and inviting environment, offering moments of reflection and connection to nature.
